What is Platelet Count (Platelets)?
Platelet Count is measured as part of a complete blood count (cbc) panel. Your platelet count is normal. Your blood's clotting ability appears healthy.
What does a high Platelet Count mean?
Your platelet count is elevated (thrombocytosis). This can occur after infection, inflammation, iron deficiency, or surgery. High counts can occasionally increase clot risk.
If markedly elevated: Your platelet count is very high. Please discuss this with your doctor as it may increase the risk of abnormal clotting.
What does a low Platelet Count mean?
Your platelet count is below normal (thrombocytopenia). You may bruise or bleed more easily than usual. Causes range from viral infections to medications to immune conditions.
If markedly low: Your platelet count is critically low. You are at risk of serious spontaneous bleeding. Please seek immediate medical attention.
